Ending the Chinese Ivory Trade

July 23, 2017 Helen LeBrecht

On December 30,2016, the leader of the Chinese government announced the end of the Chinese ivory trade which is the largest in the world on December 31, 2017. My son Alexandre contacted me about this wonderful story signaling the beginning of the end of massive slaughter of 30,000 African elephants annually for their tusks. he realized that I would be extremely excited about this amazing turnaround in Chinese policy. However, although the Chinese government hasclosed 10 of the former 35 ivory carving factories, it must still lock the doors on the remaining 25 government ownedivory carving factories. It is important that China provide documentation on additional closings and plans to close all of the remaining factories by the end of this year. Without this information, it is merely an empty unfulfilled promise. We pray that this evidence will be provided at which time, we will give China our admiration and respect.
